US Congressmen rebuke Obama administration for stark criticism of Israel

16 March 2010

The sharp criticism by the Obama administration of Israel’s announcement to build 1,600 new housing units in east Jerusalem has been rebuked by a number of US senators from both the Democratic and the Republican parties. Senator John McCain of Arizona, who lost against Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, said: "It might be well if our friends in the administration and other places in the United States could start refocusing our efforts on the peace process. Now we have had our spat. We have had our family fight, and it is time for us now to stop and get our eye back on the goal, which is the commencement of the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks."

McCain and the independent senator from Connecticut, Joe Lieberman, both urged the administration to ease the tone of the dispute, which they said was demonstrating disunity and weakness to steadfast allies of Iran. "It is unnecessary; it is destructive of our shared national interest. It is time to lower voices, to get over the family feud between the US and Israel. It just doesn't serve anybody's interests but our enemies.

Congressman Eric Cantor, the number two Republican in the House of Representatives, declared: “To say that I am deeply concerned with the irresponsible comments that the White House, vice president and the secretary of state have made against Israel is an understatement. In an effort to ingratiate our country with the Arab world, this administration has shown a troubling eagerness to undercut our allies and friends.”

On Friday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had upbraided Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a telephone call for the housing announcement, and White House officials have since repeated the criticism in public. "It is hard to see how spending a weekend condemning Israel for a zoning decision in its capital city amounts to a positive step towards peace," Senator Sam Brownback, a Republican from Kansas, was quoted by AP as saying. On Tuesday, Clinton struck a more conciliatory tone when she told reporters in Washington that there was no crisis in US-Israeli relations and that both nations were bound by a "close, unshakeable bond."

Clinton added: "We are engaged in very active consultations with the Israelis over steps that we think would demonstrate the requisite commitment to the process. It's been a very important effort on their part as well as ours. We know how hard this is. This is a very difficult, complex matter. But the Obama administration is committed to a two-state solution."

US Middle East envoy George Mitchell meanwhile has delayed his departure to the region, where he was scheduled to hold separate talks with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Pres. Obama, VP Biden, Sec.of State Clinton,

This is a letter I never thought I’d write. I’m an 82 year old American of the Jewish faith though not belonging to any Synagogue or Temple in other word non observing. I’ve been a life long Democrat and have voted in every election since I was 21, National and Local. I served Honorably in the U.S. Navy during the second World War. I’m a Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather. In 1976 on our nations Two Hundredth birthday I stood on the Brooklyn side of the Narrows watching the Tall Ships of many nations as they passed the Statue of Liberty in Salute and Thanked this, our country for being good to my Parents who came here legally from an anti-semitic Russia under the Tsar. Jews were welcomed here and contributed much to this Country from the Supreme Court Justices to Music, Arts, Business, Science, Medicine, Technology, the Military etc. in all areas of life in this country F D.R was a great President, yet he sent a ship full of escaping Jews from Nazi Germany back to Germany to be slaughtered. He was told and knew of the camps that were burning bodies of Jews by the hundreds of thousands and was begged to bomb the railroad tracks to “Arbite Macht Frie” and did nothing. He was a very good Christian. Now Mr. Biden goes to Israel and castigates their Prime Minister, publicly, and accuses the Israeli Government of Insulting the United States by announcing that they will continue to build Houses in their Capitol. Then Our Secretary of State Mrs. Clinton compounds this gaff from Biden who was a rude guest in their Country. All due I assume was doing your bidding Mr. Obama. You Mr. President, have created the most treasonous action by bowing to the Saudi King as if the U.S. was beneath the Muslim king. where they chop peoples hands off for stealing and women are stoned to Death for being raped and women are not allowed out in public unless fully masked and escorted by a male family member. Women are forbidden to work, drive an automobile etc. The only people I know who wear masks are Robbers, Murderers and Terrorists who want to hide their faces. Sir, you have made certain that a good 95% of Jewish Americans who voted for you in the last election will be voting Republican in the next election, Including me, where until your Administration I would have said NEVER would I or COULD I vote Republican. I’m afraid your legacy will be of Jewish Americans leaving the Democratic Party. Enjoy your one term in office. Sincerely,

I'm not happpy with the chastisement that the O'Bama administration is heaping on Israel. Instead of trying to understand that this "peace process" has been going on for a long time, patience is on the side of Israel not the U.S. Instead of siding with the Arabs, O'Bama should look at the Jewish citizens who voted for him in 2008 and who will not vote for him if he decides to run again.

"It is hard to see how spending a weekend condemning Israel for a zoning decision in its capital city amounts to a positive step towards peace," per Senator Sam Brownback. My sentiments exactlly. Mr. Obama and his administration seem hell-bent on catering to the never-satisfied Palestinians, and in turn to the hostile Islamic elements. He undermines his own credibility with regard to the real requirements of leadership and strength in confronting America's real threats. Shame on you, Mr. Obama, Ms. Clinton, and Joe Biden. Wise up!

Obama and his cronies are no friends to Israel. They are following Obama's proclivity to Islam because they think it will get them political points. They should have already seen that pandering to the arabs is always a loser. Israel is the US's most trustworthy ally. The US and the world need Israel. and Israel needs concrete steps and actions, not the pablum that "we are concerned with Israel's security." No instruction to prejudice the government based on religion will fly in Israel, nor would it fly in the US. The hypocrites leading our government would never restrict housing based on religion in the US, though they want to do just that in sovereign Israel. The PM must tell them in no uncertain terms to get lost.

I absolutely believe that the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton especially is an enemy of Israel. They are not in charge of Israel, they cannot decide what Israel can or cannot do. Hillary Clinton needs to be condemned by all Jews (Worldwide) for her continued remarks against Israel.

I follow these things very closely and I am a supporter of Israel. This is the same kind of Fear that the Bush administration cranked out. I thought you were above this. I for one will wait and see how or if I will continue to support financially this organization

Well, if NO FRIEND is an example of a typical illiterate opponent of President Obama, then the latter should win re-election in a landslide!

The Obama/Biden/Clinton administration needs to open its eyes and recognize the undeniable justification for Israeli control over the Old City. From 1948 until 1967, the Old City was under the control of Jordan. Jewish life in the Old City came to a standstill. Jews were not allowed to visit the Wailing Wall. They were not allowed to visit the Dome of the Rock, where Abraham was ready to accept G-d's order to sacrifice his son Isaac. Jewish tombstones were pulled up and used for road paving or were further desecrated and used as latrines. Anybody with a memory of the past recognizes that if East Jerusalem comes under Palestinian control, Jews will again lose access to their holy sites.

A second consideration is that since 1967, East Jerusalem has become part of a vital modern city with access to Jews, Moslems and Christians. For the most part, the three groups are living together harmoniously and the city is "working" very well. Israel has guaranteed the sanctity of the Holy Places of all faiths. Israel has greatly improved city services, schooling, social welfare programs. Palestinians living under Israeli rule in East Jerusalem are living on a far higher plane than they did under Jordanian rule.

Israel must never surrender the Old City to Palestinian control, because once the Palestinians gain control, they will do exactly what they did in the past, denying access to Jews and defiling the Jewish holy places. The Palestinians should make their capitol in Hebron, which is a primarily Palestinian city unlike Jerusalem which is a city for all faiths.

Who are the Democratic senators who have complained? These are all Republicans, of course! (Except Lieberman, who is an I, not really a Dem anymore) These people are high on rhetoric that criticizes a Dem administration. But it's the Dems that have consistently since Truman recognized it in 1948 who have been the stronger supporters of Israel, not just with words, but with aid dollars. I could not be stronger in my support for Israel. But it was the action of the Israeli government that was uncalled for and in this instance, Israel that should have been more considerate of its ally. That said, I do agree that it is time to move on and get back to the peace process.

No Friend, over 2 years ago

Prior to the 2008 election, an attorney named Howard Gutman, sent out long and specific emails to jewish voters describing his conviction that "Obama will be the best friend in this country that Israel has ever had." In exchange, he became U.S. Ambassador to Belgium.

Make no mistake, Obama and his administration, through and through, are Israel's mortal enemies. Hillary Clinton and her husband live off of Arab donations.

Any Jewish American who votes for Obama in '12 casts their vote against any allegience to Israel and the Jewish people everywhere, in exchange for fealty to their Democratic Socialist party, their own narrow interests, or an Ambassadorship to some small inconsequential formerly-Nazi occupied country.
