The Russian-born Jewish businessman Moshe Kantor has been decorated with one of Poland’s highest honors. Kantor received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit from the outgoing Polish president Alexander Kwasniewski. Kantor, chairman of the European Jewish Congress’ board of governors, was one of the main organizers of this year’s events commemorating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. He also heads the World Holocaust Forum, a standing international body that convenes every few years in order to assess achievements in Holocaust remembrance and education. It was for this body of work and for his outstanding leadership of European Jewry that the Polish medal was awarded to Kantor, so far the only non-Pole receiving this honor.
