Together with other Jewish organizations, the World Jewish Congress (WJC) will co-host an event entitled ‘The Untold Story of 850,000 Refugees’ in New York this week. It will take place on Wednesday, 3 December 2014, at 7:30 p.m., at UN Headquarters (ECOSOC Chamber). The event is organized by Ambassador Ron Prosor and Israel’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and comes on the heels of the first official commemoration in Israel on Sunday of the suffering of Jews who were expelled or forced to leave Arab and other Muslim countries in the wake of the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948.
WJC President Ronald S. Lauder will be among the keynote speakers at the UN event. Israel’s Minister of National Infrastructure, Energy and Water, Silvan Shalom, will be the guest of honor.
The program includes a special musical performance by Dudu Tassa and the Al Kuwaitis and a preview of the Israeli film ‘Farewell Baghdad’ which is based on the novel of Eli Amir, who was born and raised in Iraq. The film describes the life of the Jews of Iraq on the eve of the establishment of Israel.
You are cordially invited to attend what will be an informative and exciting event. To obtain passes to the event, please register immediately by email to MichalC@newyork.mfa.gov.il
Over the past years, the WJC has been at the forefront of raising this issue with governments and international organizations, notably the United Nations. The WJC’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/wjc.org) currently features a number of articles and video interviews with contemporary witnesses.
