NEW YORK – The World Jewish Congress today praised the US-Israel military coordination that resulted in the interdiction of a ship bearing advanced rockets that was sent by Iran in order to arm the Hamas regime in Gaza.
“Prompt American-Israeli intelligence and military coordination, as well as the personal attention of President Obama, thankfully led to the seizing of this ship before its deadly cargo wound up in terrorists’ hands,” said WJC President Ronald S. Lauder. “Iran’s shipment of these weapons, which could have threatened the lives of millions of Israelis, show that its true aims are to sow violence, instability, and terror.”
According to a report by 'Agence France Presse', White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One that American intelligence and military channels began coordinating with their Israeli counterparts as soon as the shipment was spotted. President Barack Obama also directed the US military to work out contingencies in case it had to intercept the vessel, Carney said.
"Throughout this time, our intelligence and military activities were closely coordinated with our Israeli counterparts, who ultimately chose to take the lead in interdicting this shipment of illicit arms," AFP quoted Carney as saying. He added: "We will continue to stand up to Iran's support for destabilizing activities in the region in coordination with our partners and allies. These illicit acts are unacceptable to the international community and in gross violation of Iran's Security Council obligations."
