Austria’s President Heinz Fischer has denounced the posting of an anti-Semitic cartoon by Heinz-Christian Strache, the leader of the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ). Fischer called it a "low point of political culture, which deserves to be universally and roundly condemned”. He said Strache had been playing on the remnants of anti-Semitism in Austria.
World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder was among those who had urged Austrian leaders to publicly condemn Strache’s posting. “Silence is not a credible option,” Lauder had declared three weeks ago after the posting appeared on Strache’s Facebook page.
