Executive Committee & Governing Board
10 June 2007
The Executive Committee and Governing Board of the World Jewish Congress met in New York on 10 June 2007
These meetings followed the announcement on 14 May 2007 by the president of the World Jewish Congress, Edgar M. Bronfman, that he intended to step down from his position on 10 June 2007.
The process for electing an acting president is described in a memorandum circulated to the WJC membership on May 11, 2007.
Prior to 10 June, four people had declared themselves as candidates for the position of President.
Three of the candidates addressed the meeting of the Executive Committee after which the Committee held an open vote, with the majority of votes cast being for Mr Lauder. The Executive Committee therefore resolved to recommend that the Governing Board - meeting later the same day - elect Mr Lauder as President.
At its subsequent meeting the Governing Board voted in favour of Mr Lauder who was therefore duly elected as President of the WJC.
The Governing Board also unanimously elected Matthew Bronfman as its chairman.
Ronald Lauder and Matthew Bronfman had mounted a united bid to lead the WJC and had run on a joint platform.
